UCP Delrey School Launches Speakers Series

May 4, 2009

New trends and techniques regularly develop in the special needs education field, and it's up to professionals and families of special needs children to stay up to date on the latest developments in the field.  To address this need, UCP Delrey School will introduce the UCP Delrey Quarterly Speakers Series where experts will discuss a wide range of special needs education topics.  The first lecture is set for May 27 and will feature an expert in cortical visual impairment (CVI), the leading cause of visual impairment in young children.

"Our primary focus at UCP Delrey School is providing educational and therapeutic services for children with multiple disabilities, and we want to further that mission with a community dialog that advances special needs education," UCP Delrey School Assistant Principal Terri Clark said.  "The speakers series serves both professionals and parents as a practical and affordable resource."

UCP Delrey School will launch the series with speaker Dr. Sandra Newcomb, technical assistance specialist for the University of Maryland's Department of Special Education, Wednesday, May 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at UCP Delrey School (3610 Commerce Drive, Baltimore 21227).

Newcomb will focus her discussion on CVI, a condition that prevents the brain from consistently understanding and interpreting what the eye sees.  Newcomb will introduce the condition, show videos of children wtih CVI, and offer ways to modify the home and classroom to help children with CVI.

Newcomb teaches the visually impaired in Prince George's County, in addition to serving the Department of Special Education at the University of Maryland.  She specializes in family support and CVI.  Newcomb earned her Ph.D. at the University of Maryland and holds certification in early childhood special education and visual impairment.

Registration for this lecture is required and costs $25.  To register, click here for the brochure or contact Lauren Magee at lmagee@ucp-cm.org or 410-484-4540, ext. 4018.
